Learn how to play and solve Tents and Trees puzzles without guessing. Rules, twelve solving techniques with example boards, tips, and practice links.
Give every tree its own tent, directly above, below, left, or right of it. Tents can never touch, not even diagonally. The numbers outside the grid tell you how many tents each row and column contains. A tent can sit beside two trees but belongs to only one, so there are always as many tents as trees.
Not on this site. Every puzzle is solved and graded by a solver that works like a person: it always takes the easiest logical move, so there is always a forced move available. Hard and Expert puzzles sometimes need a short “what if” (test a cell and follow the forced moves until a rule breaks), but never a blind guess. If you feel stuck, re-scan the zero lines, tight counts, and trees with few neighbours first.
Each number is the total number of tents in that row or column. A 0 means the whole line is grass. The numbers count tents only; trees do not count toward them.
Yes. A tree can touch two tents, but it owns only one of them. The other tent belongs to a different tree. What can never happen is two tents touching each other, or a tree with no tent beside it.
Following a what-if through: testing a cell, following only forced moves, and reaching a contradiction several steps later. Expert puzzles sometimes need it. Everything before it, including counting in pairs, row shadows, and trees claiming a row, is pattern recognition you can drill in Unlimited mode.
